Walnuts are a food that’s good for your brain!

If you want to have a healthy brain, and who doesn’t, then there are some delicious foods you will want to enjoy often.

 

More and more research these days focuses on brain health. There’s never a guarantee, of course, but taking care of your brain can lower the risk for conditions like Alzheimer’s disease, other dementia, cognitive decline, and memory loss. The good news is that nutrition and other lifestyle habits such as physical activity and getting adequate sleep can keep your brain healthier.

Foods that are Good for Your Brain

Take a look at this yummy food list and then add some/all of them consistently to your meals and snacks. Why? Because quality nutrition matters and they are good for your brain!

  • Walnuts
  • Other nuts and nut butter
  • Ground flax seeds
  • Beans and legumes such as black beans, chickpeas, lentils, edamame
  • Dark green leafy vegetables such as spinach, collards, Swiss chard, Romaine lettuce
  • All other vegetables
  • Fruit such as strawberries and blueberries, and avocado
  • Fatty fish such as salmon, trout, sardines, chunk light tuna, mackerel
  • Skinless poultry
  • Extra virgin olive oil (EVOO)
  • Tea and coffee

How to Eat More Foods that are Good for Your Brain

  • Mix up breakfast. For example, have canned, fatty fish on a slice of whole grain bread or toast; or a smoothie with frozen berries, ground flax seeds, and fresh spinach.
  • Learn new ways to do lunch. For example, enjoy an omelet stuffed full of sautéed leafy greens and topped with a scoop of avocado guacamole; or a big green Romaine lettuce salad topped with walnuts, fresh berries, and avocado slices.
  • Be creative with dinner. For example, eat grilled or broiled salmon on a bed of sautéed kale or Swiss chard and baked sweet potato fries; or go meatless with a spinach lasagna – easy on the cheese – and a colorful mixed salad with lemon & EVOO dressing.
  • Think about your snacks. For example, a slice of whole grain bread (or whole grain crackers) with peanut butter and sliced strawberries; or chickpea hummus on carrots and cucumber slices.
