September 17, 2024 By Cindy Silver

2023 Mixed Berries Crisp imageIf you like to bake then try making a frozen fruit crisp – for easy, for quick, for tasty, for better nutrition!

There are so many advantages to frozen fruit that listing them all is hard to do. Let’s start with 5 reasons to try a frozen fruit of your choice:

5 Reasons to Try Frozen Fruit

  1. Frozen fruit is easy to find in every grocery store.
  2. Frozen fruit is ready to use.
  3. Frozen fruit is inexpensive compared to fresh fruit.
  4. Frozen fruit is full of flavor.
  5. Frozen fruit is nutritious, with no added sugars.

Recipe for Mixed Berries Crisp

Here is a totally delicious and easy recipe you can make at home, in minutes. Whenever you include frozen fruit in your ingredients, it’s a smart decision.

Mixed Berries Crisp

Makes 6 large or 9 small servings

  • 24 ounces                                     Mixed berries, frozen
  • 1 tablespoon                                Lemon juice, squeezed from fresh
  • 2 tablespoons                              Sugar, white granulated
  • 2 tablespoons                              Whole wheat flour
  • ½ -1 teaspoon                              Cinnamon, ground

Topping:

  • 2 tablespoons                              Butter, unsalted
  • ¼ cup                                              Whole wheat flour
  • ¼ cup                                              Oatmeal
  • ¼ cup                                              Sugar, brown, loosely measured, not packed down
  1. Preheat conventional oven to 375 degrees.
  2. Place frozen berries into a 9 x 9 inch baking pan
  3. Squeeze lemon juice over the berries. Pick out seeds that fall in.
  4. Sprinkle granulated sugar and whole wheat flour (1st) over berries and stir gently to distribute it evenly. Sprinkle cinnamon evenly on top.
  5. In a small bowl, combine butter, whole wheat flour (2nd,) oats and brown sugar. With clean hands, a fork, or pastry cutter, crumble everything into small pieces to use as a topping. Scatter topping evenly over mixed berries.
  6. Bake 25 minutes.

Baking Can Be Healthier Depending on Your Ingredients

Most of us think of baked desserts as decadent or not so healthy. But this is not the case if your ingredients check the boxes for quality nutrition and/or a smaller amount. The Mixed Berries Crisp is a perfect example since its primary ingredient is berries and it calls for very small amounts of sugar, brown sugar, and butter. Also, the lemon juice and oats contribute positively to its overall nutrition. When you taste this recipe it will be clear to you that sweet and healthy can coexist.
