Salad Creations With Salad Dressing You Can Make for Great Nutrition and Great Taste!

September 17, 2024 By Cindy Silver

Salad dressing
Here are some of my favorite salad dressing ingredients along with olive oil and spicy mustard.

Salad Creations – Use Your Imagination!

I love the crunch of a fresh salad. Do you? Sometimes I use leafy salad greens with grated carrots, olives and tiny tomatoes on top of my salad. Other times I use finely sliced red or green cabbage with diced sweet Bell peppers, cucumber and artichoke hearts on top. When I’m feeling super creative and super hungry, I use all of the above plus canned tuna or crumbled feta cheese on my salad. Yum. The cool thing about salads is that just about anything goes so use your imagination!

Salad Dressing To Make Yourself!

Let’s face it – bottled salad dressing is one of the easiest ways to add flavor to your salad. But, easy isn’t always best. Easy isn’t always nutritious. If you want to taste all the great flavors in your salad bowl and to add some healthy nutrition too, then it’s time to make the leap to homemade salad dressing.

3 Super Easy Salad Dressings!

1. Mash one avocado. Add 2-4 tablespoons plain nonfat yogurt. Chop up and add some fresh cilantro, fresh basil and/or fresh parsley. Add a pinch of salt & pepper. Avocados are loaded with healthy fat and fresh herbs give us health-enhancing antioxidants.

2. Smash a large clove of garlic and mince it. Add 1 teaspoon spicy mustard. Add the juice of 1/2 fresh lime or lemon. Add 2-4 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil. Lime and lemon juice are full of vitamin C and olive oil is a very healthy fat.

3. Salsa makes a tasty salad dressing so make or buy a favorite salsa with few and simple ingredients. Spice it up with Tabasco sauce if you like it hot. Salsa is made from nutrient-rich vegetables that are low in calories.

A Fun Lesson in Making Vinaigrette Salad Dressing!

Here’s a fun video by Chef Kathleen Flinn with easy tips on how to make vinaigrette salad dressing yourself. My tip is to use a 1:2 ratio of vinegar:oil to keep your dressing more moderate in calories. In her video, Kathleen uses the classic ratio of 1:3.

The Leap to Homemade!

Salad dressing can be your next edible invention. Keep it simple and try using ingredients you love with a healthy twist. By choosing lemons, limes, flavored vinegar, extra virgin olive oil, fresh garlic, chopped fresh herbs, spring onions, dry herbs, avocados and plain nonfat yogurt, you’ll find combinations you enjoy and that you feel good about.
