Tea is a Healthier Hot Beverage

Are you a fan of tea because of its flavor or because of its antioxidants and hydrating qualities…or, both?

cup of teaSometimes, a food or beverage that’s been around for centuries turns out to be a super good choice. Tea happens to be one of the best beverage choices you can make. Here’s why:

10 Fun Facts About Tea

  1. All true tea comes from the Camellia sinensis plant.
  2. The first tea was ‘discovered’ in 2737 BC, in China, per Chinese legend.
  3. In the 16th Century, tea made its way to Europe via the Portuguese.
  4. In the early 20th Century, an American accidentally invented the first tea bag, with gauze.
  5. China is the largest grower of tea today, followed closely by India.
  6. Green tea is unfermented tea plant leaves.
  7. White tea is unfermented, unopened buds of the tea plant.
  8. Black tea is fermented and oolong tea is semi-fermented.
  9. Tea is the second-most consumed beverage in the world, after water.
  10. Herbal ‘tea’ is not true tea, rather it is made from dried herbs, fruits, spices, and flowers.

3 Health-Related Facts About Tea

  1. All tea is hydrating to the body.
  2. There is less caffeine in tea than in brewed coffee, so it’s stimulant effect is less. Note: There are varying levels of caffeine in tea depending on the time steeping and temperature of the water. Longer steeping times and/or hotter water raise caffeine levels.
  3. The antioxidants in tea are specifically flavonoids which can boost the immune system as well as reduce inflammation and reduce the risk of certain cancers.

3 Surprises for Cooking with Tea

  1. Add a tea bag to water when cooking rice or pasta.
  2. Use steeped tea in a homemade soup instead of broth.
  3. Add finely ground tea leaves, or 1/2 tablespoon matcha (green tea powder) to a smoothie.

Shifting to healthier beverages is a day-to-day process with a starting point of curiosity in new flavors, better hydration, and health-enhancing antioxidants.
