Go Half and Half with Yogurt for Better Nutrition

September 7, 2018 By Cindy Silver

Yogurt and Strawberries
Vanilla flavored yogurt mixed half and half with plain yogurt is a treat with berries and cinnamon!

My sister’s been trying some better nutrition lately and she gave me this idea for a new blog after trying the half and half thing with yogurt. When you go half and half with yogurt, you substitute half of your flavored yogurt with plain yogurt. What that does for your nutrition is huge. It cuts in half the added sugars that come with a cup of flavored yogurt; it boosts up the calcium you get from your yogurt; and it leaves a half cup of flavored yogurt to mix with plain yogurt tomorrow.

Please keep in mind that throughout this blog I’ll be mentioning plain yogurt which will mean plain nonfat Greek yogurt.

5 Great Ways to Go Half and Half with Yogurt

  1. Mix half a cup of your flavored yogurt with half a cup of plain yogurt. As I mentioned above, this cuts in half the added sugars, boosts the calcium and other dairy nutrition your body needs.
  2. Mix half your coleslaw or chicken salad’s mayo with half plain yogurt. This lightens up the total fat and total calories of the creamy dressing you want and love in these two favorites.
  3. Mix half your homemade milkshake’s ice cream with half plain yogurt. This cuts in half the added sugars, maintains the important dairy nutrition, and leaves you feeling less full afterward.
  4. Mix half your bagel’s cream cheese with half plain yogurt. This reduces the total fat and calories and it boosts the calcium, vitamin D, and other dairy nutrients.
  5. Mix half your baked potato or homemade dip’s sour cream with half plain yogurt. This lightens up the total fat and calories and it boosts the calcium, vitamin D, and other dairy nutrients.

Testing Your New Skill of Going Half and Half with Yogurt

Practicing a new skill with food is the best way to master it. So, try going half and half with the yogurt ingredient in this delicious recipe for a Yogurt and Fruit Parfait. Your taste buds will be so happy.

Start Eating Better Nutrition with a Compromise

Eating better nutrition is a gradual process for most people. With flavored yogurt, for example, it’s fine to start with 3/4 cup flavored yogurt plus 1/4 cup plain yogurt. A week later, try a half and half mixture. Be patient and set a goal to reach better nutrition day-by-day. It will give you unbelievable rewards like feeling better and staying healthier.
