Busy Moms and Dads Benefit from a Grocery Store Tour

February 11, 2020 By Cindy Silver

Grocery cart moms
Busy Moms and Dads need quick meal tips and other grocery shopping ‘tools’ to succeed at the store.

A fun tour around the grocery store is a perfect way for busy moms and dads to learn about how to feed their kids better nutrition.

Even a busy mom or dad has time to learn about things they care about most – like the kids. Putting good nutrition onto the breakfast table, into the school lunch box, and onto the dinner table amounts to a big responsibility day-after-day. And, for busy moms and dads, learning the ins and outs of nutritious grocery shopping can make all the difference.

A Grocery Shopping Plan for Busy Moms and Dads – Present these tips:

  • Come to the store with 3 quick meal ideas and a shopping list for them
  • Pick out 2 or 3 fruits to serve as dessert
  • Fill in essentials like 1% milk, oat cereal, apples, plain or lower sugar yogurt, and peanut butter* (*or sunflower butter if there is a peanut allergy in the family)

Grocery Shopping Know-How for Busy Moms and Dads – Teach these concepts:

  • Try finger food veggies like fresh sugar snap peas, baby carrots, and celery sticks
  • Stay at or under 5 grams sugars in one serving of a kids’ breakfast cereal
  • Buy only 100% fruit juice rather than fruit drinks or juice drinks

Grocery Shopping Confidence for Busy Moms and Dads – Encourage with this advice:

  • Take a ‘keep it simple’ approach to shopping with fewer packaged & processed foods
  • Ask for meal ideas at the store – department managers are good resources
  • Practice label reading skills on one new product every trip

Registered Dietitians are Leaders in the Grocery Store
