A Healthier Grilled Cheese Sandwich

September 17, 2024 By Cindy Silver

Healthier Grilled Cheese
Here’s a classic sandwich with a modern nutrition makeover.

There’s something very special about a warm, gooey and toasty grilled cheese sandwich.

I guess it is true comfort food at its quickest and easiest. When I got ready to make lunch the other day, I scanned the fridge for an idea and closed it. Then I opened up the pantry for a look and closed it. Then I went back to the fridge and saw my favorite cheese calling out for me to make a grilled cheese sandwich – so, I did.

Making sandwiches for kids can be very challenging so take a look at these easy-to-do ideas that will delight the youngest members of your family.

Healthier Sandwiches, including Grilled Cheese

There are a bunch of ways to whip up healthier sandwiches and here are a few:

  • Use whole grain bread. For example, whole wheat bread, sprouted whole grain bread, or whole oatmeal bread. Or, a whole grain corn tortilla works great for a wrap style sandwich.
  • Be spread-savvy. For example, use chickpea hummus, avocado guacamole, spicy mustard, or light mayo.
  • Choose a lean filling. For example, turkey breast, lean roast beef, canned salmon or tuna, or a mix of vegetables.
  • Be picky about the cheese. For example, use Swiss or Provolone or Mozzarella which are natural cheeses, not processed.
  • Add some green. For example, add lettuce, baby kale, arugula, sliced cucumber, sliced Bell pepper, shredded Brussels sprouts, fresh parsley, or a fun mixture of these.

So, how did I make my sandwich? Here’s how:

  • Got out 2 slices of Sprouted Rye bread
  • Spritzed one side of both bread slices with extra virgin olive oil
  • Added 2 slices of Swiss cheese
  • Heated my pan to medium and then grilled my sandwich, extra virgin olive oil-spritzed sides on the outside, for 4-6 minutes per side, until toasty

Make a Sandwich a Meal

A grilled cheese sandwich or another kind are classics for lunch and yet something is missing when lunch is only a sandwich. Make lunch a meal by adding a fruit and a vegetable to your sandwich. Grilled cheese is simply a comfort food, isn’t it? I always think that it’s still important to have comfort food, even if that means modifying the recipe to create something that is a bit healthier.

Just about any comfort food recipe can be adjusted to include high quality ingredients, right? The flavor is usually just as good, too:)

A healthy diet is a premise to a better life. I’ve switched to a whole new lifestyle lately, including a healthy diet. Also, I’ve started running on a regular basis with SportMe half marathon app, which calculates pace, elevation, calories and time plus distance. Love how I feel ever since.
