Grocery Shopping 101: Fruits

May 1, 2011 By Cindy Silver

Fresh fruit
Fruit is sweeter than candy!

Why Fruit?

Good nutrition is all about enjoyment and variety. Fruit is a crowd pleaser as it offers variety, healthy carbs, fiber, vitamins, minerals and water. A big bonus in fruit is the natural sweetness as well as an abundance of  antioxidants. These natural plant elements can strengthen all your health and help guard against heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer and inflammation– a sweet deal!

Grocery Store Tips

1. Enter the store with a list of at least 3-5 fruits for your shopping cart. Choose 2 fruits that are in-season and then add 1-3 more colors to the mix. Remember, fresh, canned and frozen fruits all count so store them properly at home.

2. Try a new fruit often. Perhaps you will explore tropical mangoes or papaya, or an appealing apple variety like Cameo or Honeycrisp. Being adventurous means enjoying fruit every day.

3. Learn what’s local and ask for a taste at the store. Flavors are superior when fruits are in season. Check with your local agricultural experts, too.

Fruit is a smart choice for everyone, Mark. To help with hydration, the elderly might want to include melons and berries which are full of water as well as powerful nutrition. Thanks for your comment!

Hi Cindy,my favorite fruit is pineapples and bananas. I alternate eating them and add them to my staple of daily fruits. Bananas are great sources of healthy carbs and they taste awesome too! I just wish there were more tropical bananas available in our country, those large ones that are boiled before they are eaten. Those big bananas were given to me as a gift before and it was really different from the normal bananas that we have here. Thanks for the great post.

What about pineapple and/or banana for dessert, Mishka! I think most families and singles can benefit from serving up fruit as an after-dinner treat. Thanks for commenting!

    Hello Cindy!
Came across your site by luck as I was doing a search on natural antioxidants for a paper for our own site (we are a French Pharmaceutical Lab specialized in natural anti age / anti wrinkles supplements 🙂
You are so right in pushing for eating fruits – their properties are simply amazing and usually far better than any of the chemically generated alternatives!
May I suggest that antioxidants are also essential for protecting the skin from aging too fast? That at least should help people consume more fruits! 🙂
    Keep the great work!
    Kind regards,
    Raoul.

Thanks so much for your comment, Raoul. More youthful skin is just one more great reason to eat plenty of delicious fruit every day!
