Pizza for a New Year!

December 30, 2016 By Cindy Silver

Homemade Pizza
Healthier Pizza can be your new normal for a New Year!

Pizza for a New Year

Are you tired of dropping 20 bucks or more when ordering out for pizza? Disappointed when it comes to your door cold and soggy? Bored with the same toppings, pizza-after-pizza? It may be a perfect time for you to take the leap to making homemade pizza. The only risk is that you’ll save money, feed yourself and your family healthier food, and learn some new skills in your kitchen. Not bad.

Homemade Pizza

I’ve been experimenting with homemade pizza for at least 10 years. I’ve tried dried herbs vs. fresh herbs, thinner vs. thicker crusts, multiple dozens of toppings, all kinds of cheese, and no cheese at all. My big take-away is this: I’m a total believer that everyone can learn to make their own, delicious pizza and have a ton of fun doing it.

Healthier Crust

Think about these options for a homemade pizza crust, then take your choice: English muffin, whole wheat flour tortilla, whole wheat pita bread, thin & crispy pre-made crust, frozen pre-made thin crust. For a totally out-of-the-box choice, try a Portobello mushroom as your pizza crust. Really.

Healthier Toppings

There are no limits to what can go on top of your pizza so get creative and give it a go. Some possibilities are: Tomato sauce, pesto sauce, chopped vegetables such as Bell pepper, garlic, spinach, onion, fennel, carrot, celery or tomatoes, flaked canned tuna or salmon, leftover cooked chicken or turkey or roast beef, diced ham or Canadian bacon, fresh or dried oregano and basil.

Cheese or Not

The standard here is probably Mozzarella and/or Parmesan. Feel free to get a little crazy with other cheese options such as: feta, goat cheese with or without herbs, cheddar, Monterrey jack, Swiss, or any other favorite of yours. For a different twist, leave off the cheese and see how you like it. Remember, anything goes.

Pizza for a New You

If pizza is a food you like, or love, then I challenge you to start making it yourself, at home. Put it on your meal plan and use some healthier ingredients including loads of vegetables as your path to eating better. Even pizza can be your spark in the New Year to a New You who feels better, has more energy, and stays out of the doctor’s office. What toppings will you try on your homemade pizza?
